Student and Family Support program (SFSP)

Empowering teen moms with the knowledge and tools to navigate their post-secondary dreams alongside their kindergarten-ready children.

Our strengths-based and trauma-responsive program has four pillars:

Family Services

Each FloCrit teen parent is paired with a Family Advocate who provides one-on-one support to foster a safe community so that teen moms can build social-emotional skills, access resources, and secure vital documents (like birth certificates and social security cards). Teen parents can also explore their post-secondary options and attend career readiness workshops through our Transitions Program.

Clinical Services

Life as a teen parent can be overwhelming. FloCrit’s Bilingual Clinical Services Manager offers individual and group therapy, with services available in Spanish to accommodate the majority of parents whose home language is Spanish. Teen parents also receive parenting education through specialized curriculum designed just for FloCrit parents.

Housing

Achieving dreams begins with safe and stable housing. FloCrit Housing supports teen families with financial assistance, placement services, housing vouchers, and housing basic needs.

Workforce

FloCrit’s Workforce program equips teen parents with the workforce readiness skills that employers are looking for. We prepare them to pursue careers they’re passionate about, earn livable wages, and succeed both as parents and professionals.

“I wake up every morning, I go to the blinds, I see the whole skyline, and I think ‘Wow, this is really what my life is like…and it’s all because people motivated me and helped me get to where I am. Every single morning. I’m not joking.”

Our Program Includes

Family Advocates offer one-on-one case management to teen parents, coordinating with internal and external partners to ensure access to resources, offer social-emotional support, and help secure vital documents.

Through parenting classes, parents gain valuable skills and knowledge to navigate the challenges of birth and parenthood. Additionally, FloCrit promotes perinatal wellness by tracking birth outcomes and offering home visits during the first 6 weeks postpartum to ensure healthy starts for teen families.
  • FloCrit students receive mental health services in either English or Spanish from FloCrit’s Bilingual Clinical Services Manager, Denver Public School’s on-site social worker, or Denver Health’s on-site mental health counselor. Denver Health also provides access to mental health prescriptions through a dedicated psychiatrist and on-site pharmacy.
  • Research shows that postpartum depression can begin as early as two weeks after giving birth. At Florence Crittenton Services, we prioritize early intervention by screening for postpartum depression starting at two weeks postpartum—well ahead of the six-week timeline used by many hospitals.

Teen parents have free access to essential items like clothing, nursing supplies, diapers, wipes, books, toys, hygiene products, and more. As Class of 2022 graduate Karen shared, “Baby Bucks saved my life on multiple occasions…just knowing that I didn’t have to worry about putting clothes on my baby’s back was one less thing to worry about.”

The on-site Housing Basic Needs Store empowers FloCrit teen families to reduce their cost of living and create a space that feels like home by providing access to cleaning supplies, kitchenware, bedding, and more — all at no cost.

Teen families have the opportunity to meet with lawyers for free legal assistance by appointment as needed.

At our monthly Family Engagement Events, teen families enjoy quality time together and have fun exploring FloCrit’s supportive services, with themed gatherings like a Fall Festival, Moms and Lil Monsters Halloween Event, and a Winter Party to celebrate the holidays.

It’s important that teen parents own all vital documents for themselves and their children. SFSP assists students in obtaining birth certificates and social security cards. Through a partnership with DMV2Go, teen families can complete their driver’s license paperwork on-site, avoiding long DMV lines, and they can receive support during tax season at FloCrit’s tax clinic.

Applying for state and federal benefit programs can be confusing and time-consuming, but with assistance from their Family Advocates, teen parents can successfully apply for benefits such as TANF, WIC, SNAP, and Medicaid.

Did you know that FloCrit teen parents come from over 50 different zip codes across the Denver Metro area? To make it easier for them to reach campus, we provide transportation support through Lyft and a shuttle service from various RTD stops for qualifying students.

We know that life goes on after graduation! The Transitions Program supports seniors and recent graduates on their college and career readiness, paving the way for a successful future.

SFSP uses the Growth Framework to assess each teen parent's progress, enabling us to provide tailored support and empower teen families. See how FloCrit makes a difference for teen parents here.
